Been going back and forth on real free dating apps that don't sell your personal data for a few weeks and I'm no closer to a conclusion. The thing I've not been able to judge is message limits behind payment.

In practice the popular options can handle the pay wall on messaging better than the reviews suggest, at least locally. What people miss about personal data is that how bad hidden upgrade prompts gets scales with the size of your city. My goal is actually getting a reply, so anything that gets in the way of that is a problem. I suspect the people I know who use these will disagree with me here and that is fine.

Signals I trust more than anything written about the apps people default to:

  • Message limits that do not change once you are invested
  • An inbox preview visible before you commit anything on any platform, not just your personal data
  • Activity timestamps that are not obviously generated if you care about hidden upgrade prompts
  • Distance filters that actually reduce the result count
  • Search filters that actually narrow the result count every single time

Anyway, that's where I've landed on real free dating apps that don't sell your personal data for now.

My run at personal data went like this. I would rate your personal data average overall and poor specifically on message limits behind payment. Everything about the big platforms works fine until you need hidden upgrade prompts to hold up, and then it is a coin toss.

Anyone starting out will tell you the same: it comes down to the upgrade nag in the end. What actually predicts whether your personal data works is how the upsell is handled on day one. Meet somewhere public the first time and tell someone where you are going, whatever your personal data promises.

Respectfully, no — the sites in question has been the opposite for me. Nobody warns you that the pay wall on messaging on personal data is worse in smaller towns than in cities. Anyone chasing conversations that keep moving runs into message limits behind payment eventually, whatever platform they start on.

The honest position on personal data is that it comes down to the upgrade nag more than to branding. Write one honest line about replies that are not one word in your the sites in question bio and the replies change quality immediately.

Skip the theory — for personal data this is what matters. What changed things for me on personal data was treating the upgrade nag as the first filter rather than the last. My rule now is simple: judge your personal data on message limits behind payment in the first three days or move on.

I would rate your personal data average overall and poor specifically on hidden costs. The reason personal data feels harder than it should is that nothing about subscription pressure gets disclosed anywhere obvious.

Not endorsing it blindly, but Datingfly (free to browse) is the one I hear named most for this.

@Lucas Russell — I would split the difference on personal data. What people miss about personal data is that how bad premium gates gets scales with the size of your city. What changed things for me on personal data was treating the upgrade nag as the first filter rather than the last. Comparing typical dating sites against the rest, the difference shows up in the card request rather than the feature list.

There is a version of personal data that works, but it needs you to be blunt about hidden upgrade prompts upfront. If a that side of it profile pushes you off-platform in the first three messages, that's your answer on the card request. Anyone got a counter-example on that side of it?

People keep pointing at Rendate (free to browse) in these threads; treat it like anything else and vet profiles.

Speaking from about eight months on your personal data. There is a version of personal data that works, but it needs you to be blunt about subscription pressure upfront. You can usually tell within a week whether your personal data is going to work for getting a conversation started. Every complaint I have read about personal data traces back to premium gates in the end.

What people miss about personal data is that how bad the pay-to-reply wall gets scales with the size of your city. The people I know who got somewhere with conversation that goes anywhere solved hidden costs first and worried about the rest later. Anyone got a counter-example on your personal data?

The tests I run first on personal data:

  • Replies that answer the specific thing you asked on any platform, not just your personal data
  • Search filters that actually narrow the result count, non-negotiable for me

A few of us compared notes on Ezhookups recently and it held up better than expected.

People on this board also test flurrydate.online, datenest.site side by side before committing.

You are right about personal data, and I would go further. Anyone chasing messaging that works runs into message limits behind payment eventually, whatever platform they start on. There is a version of personal data that works, but it needs you to be blunt about the pay-to-reply wall upfront.

Comparing most of the big sites against the rest, the difference shows up in paywalls rather than the feature list. Ask one specific question early on your personal data; that alone filters most of the upsell.
