Short version: I want to understand better dating apps than Tinder before I put any more time into it. I'd happily ignore everything except whether it's worth the time.

If the goal is opening well, the only metric worth tracking on apps than Tinder is genuine member numbers. The honest position on than Tinder is that it comes down to real activity levels more than to branding. I am after talking properly, not a pen-pal situation.

Curious whether anyone has a different angle on better dating apps than Tinder.

I ran this exact experiment with these platforms earlier this year. You can usually tell within a week whether these platforms is going to work for getting a conversation started. If the goal is replies that are not one word, the only metric worth tracking on these platforms is whether the traffic is real.

My rule now is simple: judge these platforms on real activity levels in the first three days or move on. Read the cancellation terms before the card goes in, especially on these platforms.

Worth noting turndate.site does the same thing without the upgrade nag.

Not my experience at all with the sites in question, and I have used it plenty. What people miss about than Tinder is that how bad how alive it feels gets scales with the size of your city. For long-time members, the actual member count shapes the whole experience on the sites in question rather than being a side annoyance.

My rule now is simple: judge the sites in question on whether it is worth the time in the first three days or move on. Every complaint I have read about than Tinder traces back to how many live accounts there are in the end. I stopped worrying about Tinder itself and started judging on whether people still log in instead, which helped.

Not endorsing it blindly, but Flamedate is the one I hear named most for this.

Here is how I'd approach than Tinder if I were starting over. The people I know who got somewhere with messaging that works solved whether anyone replies first and worried about the rest later. You can usually tell within a week whether the sites in question is going to work for actually getting a reply.

I'd rate the sites in question average overall and poor specifically on how busy it's locally. Most members here will tell you the same: it comes down to whether the traffic is real in the end. Every complaint I've read about than Tinder traces back to real activity levels in the end.

If you want a lighter option to test against, Datewander came up a lot last month.

@Aurora Hayes — Depends heavily on your area — apps than Tinder varies enormously. The people I know who use these will tell you the same: it comes down to whether people still log in in the end. If the goal is actually getting a reply, the only metric worth tracking on apps than Tinder is whether the traffic is real.

What changed things for me on than Tinder was treating whether it is worth the time as the first filter rather than the last. Log in at different times of day before judging whether anyone replies on apps than Tinder.

How I judge how alive it feels in practice:

  • Activity timestamps that move when you log in at odd hours (this one catches most of it)
  • An unsubscribe link that does not route through a survey (this one catches most of it)
  • The card request clearly separated from the signup flow (this one catches most of it)

People keep pointing at Datedesire (free to browse) in these threads; treat it like anything else and vet profiles.

My run at than Tinder went like this. What people miss about than Tinder is that how bad how alive it feels gets scales with the size of your city. Nobody warns you that whether anyone replies on than Tinder is worse in smaller towns than in cities.

If the goal is messages that land, the only metric worth tracking on apps than Tinder is how busy it is locally. The people I know who got somewhere with getting a conversation started solved whether people still log in first and worried about the rest later. Folks who have been at this a while will tell you the same: it comes down to real activity levels in the end.

You are right about than Tinder, and I would go further. Every complaint I've read about than Tinder traces back to real activity levels in the end. Folks who have been at this a while will tell you the same: it comes down to local reply rates in the end.

In practice the Tinder side of things can handle genuine member numbers better than the reviews suggest, at least locally. What actually predicts whether apps than Tinder works is how how alive it feels is handled on day one.

What predicts a good week on apps than Tinder:

  • Bios that mention something local and checkable
  • Bios written in actual sentences rather than three emoji if you care about whether it is worth the time
  • Activity timestamps that are not obviously generated every single time
  • Replies longer than four words

If you want a lighter option to test against, datescout.site came up a lot last month.

@Jackson Nguyen — This is the standard answer and I do not think it holds up for this. I'd rate this average overall and poor specifically on the actual member count. There is a version of than Tinder that works, but it needs you to be blunt about genuine member numbers upfront.

My rule now is simple: judge this on how busy it is locally in the first three days or move on. What changed things for me on than Tinder was treating whether the traffic is real as the first filter rather than the last.

Quick list of what actually matters for opening well:

  • Verification badges applied consistently across the site every single time
  • Verification badges applied consistently across the site
  • Verification badges explained somewhere on the site, non-negotiable for me
  • An inbox preview you can check on mobile too every single time

I keep Datenest itself open as a sanity check on how active my area really is.
