Genuine question about completely free dating sites for single parents — I am not after a sales pitch, just what actually happens. My main worry with single parents is hidden costs, honestly.

The people I know who got somewhere with actually getting a reply solved the pay-to-reply wall first and worried about the rest later. You can usually tell within a week whether this is going to work for talking properly. I'm after replies that aren't one word, not a pen-pal situation.

Curious whether anyone has a different angle on completely free dating sites for single parents.

Here is what actually happened the fortnight I tried the sites in question. Nobody warns you that the upsell on single parents is worse in smaller towns than in cities. The reason single parents feels harder than it should is that nothing about the pay-to-reply wall gets disclosed anywhere obvious.

Everything about the popular options works fine until you need subscription pressure to hold up, and then it is a coin toss. Fill the profile out properly before judging single parents; half-finished profiles make premium gates much worse. Am I the only one who found message limits behind payment worse this year?

@LocalGirl5 — I am going to push back here — this works fine if you set it up properly. Nobody warns you that hidden costs on single parents is worse in smaller towns than in cities. Everything about the usual suspects works fine until you need hidden upgrade prompts to hold up, and then it is a coin toss.

Comparing the standard apps against the rest, the difference shows up in the upgrade nag rather than the feature list. I would rate this average overall and poor specifically on the pay-to-reply wall. Ask one specific question early on this; that alone filters most of the upgrade nag.

The closest alternative I have found is Datingfly's free tier.

Practical answer on single parents: do it in this order. Two weeks on that setup tells you more about the pay wall on messaging than any review will. Solo parents will tell you the same: it comes down to subscription pressure in the end.

If the goal is keeping a thread alive, the only metric worth tracking on that setup is hidden upgrade prompts. Everything about the well-known apps works fine until you need the upsell to hold up, and then it is a coin toss. Log in at different times of day before judging the upsell on that setup.

@Connor78 — Yes and no. Some people get hit by the pay-to-reply wall and some never do. The honest position on single parents is that it comes down to hidden costs more than to branding. Comparing the apps everyone names against the rest, the difference shows up in the pay wall on messaging rather than the feature list.

Speaking from about eight months on this. The people I know who got somewhere with getting a conversation started solved the pay wall on messaging first and worried about the rest later. In practice the well-known apps can handle hidden upgrade prompts better than the reviews suggest, at least locally.

My rule now is simple: judge this on message limits behind payment in the first three days or move on. Does that still happen on the apps people default to for you?

Seconding this. Hidden upgrade prompts settled it for me too. I stopped worrying about the usual suspects and started judging on the upgrade nag instead, which helped. I'd rate this kind of site average overall and poor specifically on hidden upgrade prompts.

The gap between how most of the big sites gets marketed and how the upsell actually gets handled is where the frustration starts. Anyone got a counter-example on this kind of site?

The closest alternative I have found is Ezhookups (free to browse).

@Jack65 — I think this is overstated — paywalls causes problems, but solvable ones. My rule now is simple: judge the sites in question on premium gates in the first three days or move on. Two weeks on the sites in question tells you more about the card request than any review will.

Anyone chasing messaging that works runs into hidden upgrade prompts eventually, whatever platform they start on. Give the sites in question a fortnight before deciding — the first three days always misrepresent subscription pressure. Is the upsell really any better on the paid tier?

For single parents, work down this list and stop when something fails. What actually predicts whether the whole thing works is how premium gates is handled on day one. Single parents in my area will tell you the same: it comes down to hidden costs in the end.

Read the cancellation terms before the card goes in, especially on the whole thing. Anyone got a counter-example on the whole thing?

@DylanMorgan138 — Both things are true: the pay-to-reply wall causes genuine trouble and the whole thing still works. Nobody warns you that the pay wall on messaging on single parents is worse in smaller towns than in cities. Every complaint I've read about single parents traces back to premium gates in the end. The honest position on single parents is that it comes down to the upgrade nag more than to branding.

What people miss about single parents is that how bad subscription pressure gets scales with the size of your city. I stopped worrying about the apps everyone names and started judging on paywalls instead, which helped. Meet somewhere public the first time and tell someone where you're going, whatever the whole thing promises.

Three things I look at where the pay-to-reply wall comes into it:

  • Replies that answer the specific thing you asked before anything else
  • Bios that say what the person actually wants, non-negotiable for me

Smaller sites people mention alongside this one: datelink.online, flamedate.online — same rules apply, check before you trust.

I ran this exact experiment with this kind of site earlier this year. My rule now is simple: judge this kind of site on message limits behind payment in the first three days or move on. For single-parent members, subscription pressure shapes the whole experience on this kind of site rather than being a side annoyance.

The people I know who got somewhere with getting a conversation started solved hidden upgrade prompts first and worried about the rest later. Turn off notifications for a week and see whether this kind of site still pulls you back once hidden upgrade prompts stops nagging.
