Genuine question about tried any of the new free dating sites that launched this year — I'm not after a sales pitch, just what actually happens. What I've not managed to check properly is the pay wall on messaging.

For anyone starting out, the pay-to-reply wall shapes the whole experience on launched this year rather than being a side annoyance. There is a version of this year that works, but it needs you to be blunt about the upsell upfront. I'm after replies that aren't one word, not a pen-pal situation. Curious whether regular members have found the same.

Still open to being talked out of my position on tried any of the new free dating sites that launched this year.

Simplest route through this year I have found:

  • A cancellation route you can complete without emailing support every single time
  • Message limits published somewhere other than the terms page every single time
  • The card request absent from the free tier entirely if you care about the upsell
  • The card request held back until you have seen the inbox, non-negotiable for me
  • Replies that arrive without a nudge (this one catches most of it)

Nobody warns you that the pay wall on messaging on this year is worse in smaller towns than in cities. Two weeks on the options here tells you more about hidden upgrade prompts than any review will.

I'd rate the options here average overall and poor specifically on premium gates. My rule now is simple: judge the options here on the upgrade nag in the first three days or move on. Log in at different times of day before judging the pay wall on messaging on the options here.

Not endorsing it blindly, but Datelink is the one I hear named most for this.

Both things are true: hidden upgrade prompts causes genuine trouble and launched this year still works. There is a version of this year that works, but it needs you to be blunt about hidden upgrade prompts upfront. Nobody warns you that paywalls on this year is worse in smaller towns than in cities.

The people I know who got somewhere with conversations that keep moving solved hidden costs first and worried about the rest later. Log in at different times of day before judging the upgrade nag on launched this year.

My filter for this year is basically:

  • Distance filters you can pin to a neighbourhood
  • Profile photos that look like the same person across all of them (this one catches most of it)
  • Distance filters that do not silently widen overnight every single time

The closest alternative I have found is Datebie.

Speaking from about eight months on these platforms. The honest position on this year is that it comes down to message limits behind payment more than to branding. I'd rate these platforms average overall and poor specifically on hidden costs.

For anyone starting out, the pay wall on messaging shapes the whole experience on these platforms rather than being a side annoyance. Look for a browse-before-signup option on the apps everyone names — that tells you a lot about message limits behind payment.

Can confirm on this year, having wasted a couple of months there. My rule now is simple: judge this on the pay-to-reply wall in the first three days or move on. Anyone starting out will tell you the same: it comes down to paywalls in the end.

The people I know who got somewhere with getting past the first message solved hidden costs first and worried about the rest later. In practice most of the big sites can handle message limits behind payment better than the reviews suggest, at least locally. Screenshot anything resembling a payment trap on this and report it.

@Megan Henderson — I'm going to push back here — launched this year works fine if you set it up properly. There is a version of this year that works, but it needs you to be blunt about premium gates upfront. Read the cancellation terms before the card goes in, especially on launched this year.

Skip the theory — for this year this is what matters. What actually predicts whether launched this year works is how premium gates is handled on day one. The people I know who got somewhere with conversations that keep moving solved the pay-to-reply wall first and worried about the rest later.

Not endorsing it blindly, but Turndate (free to browse) is the one I hear named most for this.

Members occasionally point at datewander.site, souldate.site too — vet them the same way.

@David87 — Partly right. The hidden costs complaint is fair; the rest I'd argue with. People using these sites will tell you the same: it comes down to the pay-to-reply wall in the end. There is a version of this year that works, but it needs you to be blunt about paywalls upfront. Comparing the apps people default to against the rest, the difference shows up in the card request rather than the feature list.
