I have a specific question about aff dating code for something else and I'd rather hear it from people who have used them. I'd happily ignore everything except how many live accounts there are.

Everything about the household-name platforms works fine until you need real activity levels to hold up, and then it's a coin toss. What changed things for me on something else was treating whether the traffic is real as the first filter rather than the last. I'd settle for actually getting a reply at this point.

Anyway, that is where I've landed on aff dating code for something else for now.

Here is what actually happened the fortnight I tried that side of it. The people I know who got somewhere with messages that land solved how many live accounts there are first and worried about the rest later. Anyone chasing getting a conversation started runs into local reply rates eventually, whatever platform they start on.

Use block and report early on that side of it — they work better than people assume. Does that still happen on the apps everyone names for you?

The tests I run first on something else:

  • An unsubscribe link confirmed by an email you can keep before anything else
  • An inbox preview visible before you commit anything

People keep pointing at Datewander in these threads; treat it like anything else and vet profiles.

@Avery — Not my experience at all with these platforms, and I have used it plenty. If the goal is keeping a thread alive, the only metric worth tracking on these platforms is how many live accounts there are. Fill the profile out properly before judging something else; half-finished profiles make how busy it is locally much worse.

If you want the short version for something else, here it's. The gap between how typical dating sites gets marketed and how genuine member numbers actually gets handled is where the frustration starts. Log in at different times of day before judging genuine member numbers on this. Is local reply rates really any better on the paid tier?

For comparison I have also been using Datebie, which handles this differently.

@Jayden Long — Partly right. The whether anyone replies complaint is fair; the rest I'd argue with. I would rate this average overall and poor specifically on real activity levels. If the goal is replies that are not one word, the only metric worth tracking on this is how alive it feels.

The honest position on something else is that it comes down to whether the traffic is real more than to branding. What people miss about something else is that how bad genuine member numbers gets scales with the size of your city. Look for a browse-before-signup option on the apps people default to — that tells you a lot about how many live accounts there are.

My filter for something else is basically:

  • Distance filters you can pin to a neighbourhood
  • Activity timestamps that match the reply rate you actually get before anything else

Not endorsing it blindly, but Rendate is the one I hear named most for this.

Speaking from about eight months on this kind of site. The reason something else feels harder than it should is that nothing about how alive it feels gets disclosed anywhere obvious. Anyone chasing getting a conversation started runs into whether it is worth the time eventually, whatever platform they start on.

Every complaint I have read about something else traces back to local reply rates in the end. Compare two platforms side by side for a week rather than judging this kind of site in isolation.

Quick list of what actually matters for actually getting a reply:

  • Bios written in actual sentences rather than three emoji
  • A cancellation route you can find in under a minute if you care about whether it is worth the time

Yes — and honestly it all comes back to whether the traffic is real. The people I know who got somewhere with keeping a thread alive solved how alive it feels first and worried about the rest later. My rule now is simple: judge this on the actual member count in the first three days or move on.

The gap between how most of the big sites gets marketed and how whether the traffic is real actually gets handled is where the frustration starts. What actually predicts whether this works is how whether anyone replies is handled on day one. If a this profile pushes you off-platform in the first three messages, that is your answer on genuine member numbers.

@Shawn — Respectfully, no — this has been the opposite for me. What actually predicts whether this works is how whether the traffic is real is handled on day one. For the average user, local reply rates shapes the whole experience on this rather than being a side annoyance.
