Been going back and forth on best dating apps for 18 year olds just starting out for a few weeks and I am no closer to a conclusion. It comes down to real activity levels more than to anything on the feature list.

Everything about the well-known apps works fine until you need the actual member count to hold up, and then it is a coin toss. In practice the mainstream apps can handle whether anyone replies better than the reviews suggest, at least locally. Realistically I am looking for keeping a thread alive and nothing more complicated. Interested in whether long-time members see it the same way.

Will update this thread once I have given best dating apps for 18 year olds just starting out a proper run.

@LocalGuy74 — Respectfully, no — just starting out has been the opposite for me. The gap between how the well-known apps gets marketed and how genuine member numbers actually gets handled is where the frustration starts. Every complaint I have read about starting out traces back to whether the traffic is real in the end.

Everything about the popular options works fine until you need local reply rates to hold up, and then it is a coin toss. Fill the profile out properly before judging starting out; half-finished profiles make how alive it feels much worse.

Worth noting Flamedate does the same thing without the upgrade nag.

Skip the theory — for starting out this is what matters. The honest position on starting out is that it comes down to whether the traffic is real more than to branding. You can usually tell within a week whether just starting out is going to work for messages that land.

What actually predicts whether just starting out works is how genuine member numbers is handled on day one. Everything about most of the big sites works fine until you need real activity levels to hold up, and then it is a coin toss. Do not hand over your number until you have had a live conversation about starting out.

Three things I look at where the actual member count comes into it:

  • The card request absent from the free tier entirely
  • Verification badges explained somewhere on the site, non-negotiable for me

Worth noting rendate.site does the same thing without the upgrade nag.

@LocalGuy26 — Both things are true: whether people still log in causes genuine trouble and the sites in question still works. In practice the popular options can handle whether anyone replies better than the reviews suggest, at least locally. My rule now is simple: judge the sites in question on real activity levels in the first three days or move on.

Two weeks on the sites in question tells you more about whether people still log in than any review will. If the goal is conversation that goes anywhere, the only metric worth tracking on the sites in question is local reply rates.

Before I put time into the sites in question I check:

  • A report button backed by a published moderation policy
  • A report button that does not just hide the profile from you if you care about whether people still log in

I cross-check against Flurrydate (free to browse) before I commit any time to a platform.

Tried just starting out for six weeks with a completed profile and normal photos. Nobody warns you that whether the traffic is real on starting out is worse in smaller towns than in cities. Write one honest line about opening well in your just starting out bio and the replies change quality immediately. Does that still happen on most of the big sites for you?

I keep Datebie open as a sanity check on how active my area really is.

Yes — and honestly it all comes back to whether people still log in. Newer members will tell you the same: it comes down to whether the traffic is real in the end.

@Mason Bennett — Going against the thread — the whole thing has been fine for me. I would rate the whole thing average overall and poor specifically on genuine member numbers. If the goal is conversations that keep moving, the only metric worth tracking on the whole thing is the actual member count.

Every complaint I have read about starting out traces back to how many live accounts there are in the end. What changed things for me on starting out was treating whether the traffic is real as the first filter rather than the last. On the whole thing, take the free tier as far as it goes before paying anything toward getting past the first message.

What predicts a good week on the whole thing:

  • A moderation policy written for humans rather than lawyers, non-negotiable for me
  • Verification badges applied consistently across the site
  • Replies that answer the specific thing you asked

For starting out, work down this list and stop when something fails. People who date casually will tell you the same: it comes down to whether the traffic is real in the end. Two weeks on just starting out tells you more about whether people still log in than any review will.

I stopped worrying about typical dating sites and started judging on how many live accounts there are instead, which helped. Fill the profile out properly before judging starting out; half-finished profiles make the actual member count much worse.

People keep pointing at Datebound in these threads; treat it like anything else and vet profiles.
