Been going back and forth on top 10 free dating apps according to this forum for a few weeks and I am no closer to a conclusion. The thing I have not been able to judge is the pay-to-reply wall.

What people miss about this forum is that how bad hidden costs gets scales with the size of your city. What actually predicts whether this kind of site works is how message limits behind payment is handled on day one. My goal is talking properly, so anything that gets in the way of that is a problem.

If someone has found a better route through top 10 free dating apps according to this forum, say so.

@LocalGirl63 — Going against the thread — this has been fine for me. I stopped worrying about most of the big sites and started judging on subscription pressure instead, which helped. Everything about the big platforms works fine until you need the pay wall on messaging to hold up, and then it is a coin toss.

What actually predicts whether this works is how premium gates is handled on day one. Screenshot anything resembling a payment trap on this and report it.

A few of us compared notes on the Datelink site recently and it held up better than expected.

The checklist I use for this forum is pretty short. The reason this forum feels harder than it should is that nothing about the upgrade nag gets disclosed anywhere obvious. What actually predicts whether this works is how the upsell is handled on day one.

There is a version of this forum that works, but it needs you to be blunt about premium gates upfront. Anyone chasing opening well runs into the pay-to-reply wall eventually, whatever platform they start on. In practice the standard apps can handle paywalls better than the reviews suggest, at least locally.

The closest alternative I have found is Turndate's free tier.

It is more mixed than that — these platforms depends on how you use it. There is a version of this forum that works, but it needs you to be blunt about the card request upfront. If the goal is conversations that keep moving, the only metric worth tracking on these platforms is hidden upgrade prompts. Has anyone actually tested these platforms in a smaller city?

My run at this forum went like this. Comparing the household-name platforms against the rest, the difference shows up in subscription pressure rather than the feature list. My rule now is simple: judge the options here on the upgrade nag in the first three days or move on. Screenshot anything resembling a payment trap on the options here and report it.

Can confirm on this forum, having wasted a couple of months there. Comparing the apps people default to against the rest, the difference shows up in subscription pressure rather than the feature list. Every complaint I have read about this forum traces back to the pay wall on messaging in the end.

The honest position on this forum is that it comes down to premium gates more than to branding. Anyone chasing replies that are not one word runs into the upsell eventually, whatever platform they start on. What actually predicts whether the whole thing works is how the upgrade nag is handled on day one.

The short checklist I use before trusting the whole thing:

  • A report button that leads somewhere real, non-negotiable for me
  • A report button with a response you can actually see, non-negotiable for me

@ChrisB — This is the standard answer and I do not think it holds up for the sites in question. Nobody warns you that premium gates on this forum is worse in smaller towns than in cities. Two weeks on the sites in question tells you more about the pay-to-reply wall than any review will.

Every complaint I have read about this forum traces back to hidden costs in the end. Read the cancellation terms before the card goes in, especially on the sites in question.

Simplest route through this forum I have found:

  • The card request absent from the free tier entirely
  • An unsubscribe link that does not route through a survey if you care about the pay wall on messaging
  • Bios that say what the person actually wants if you care about the pay wall on messaging
  • Search filters that do not require an upgrade to use

The people I know who got somewhere with talking properly solved message limits behind payment first and worried about the rest later.

The closest alternative I have found is Rendate.

I would split the difference on this forum. Anyone chasing keeping a thread alive runs into the pay wall on messaging eventually, whatever platform they start on. Every complaint I have read about this forum traces back to hidden costs in the end. The gap between how the standard apps gets marketed and how the pay-to-reply wall actually gets handled is where the frustration starts.

Speaking from about eight months on this. The honest position on this forum is that it comes down to the upgrade nag more than to branding. Everything about the well-known apps works fine until you need message limits behind payment to hold up, and then it is a coin toss.

There is a version of this forum that works, but it needs you to be blunt about subscription pressure upfront. In practice the usual suspects can handle the pay-to-reply wall better than the reviews suggest, at least locally.

That lines up with my experience of this forum. People who date casually will tell you the same: it comes down to hidden costs in the end. What changed things for me on this forum was treating the pay wall on messaging as the first filter rather than the last. The gap between how the mainstream apps gets marketed and how the upsell actually gets handled is where the frustration starts.

The honest position on this forum is that it comes down to the card request more than to branding. Log in at different times of day before judging the pay wall on messaging on this. What am I missing on this forum?

For comparison I have also been using Flamedate (free to browse), which handles this differently.

I ran this exact experiment with these platforms earlier this year. What actually predicts whether these platforms works is how message limits behind payment is handled on day one. I'd rate these platforms average overall and poor specifically on hidden costs. Two weeks on these platforms tells you more about hidden upgrade prompts than any review will.
