Short version: I want to understand success rate of the aff dating app for finding local meetups before I put any more time into it. It comes down to whether people still log in more than to anything on the feature list.

I would rate the whole thing average overall and poor specifically on local reply rates. In practice the usual suspects can handle how busy it is locally better than the reviews suggest, at least locally. I would settle for messaging that works at this point.

Three things I look at where the actual member count comes into it:

  • An inbox preview showing real timestamps
  • Replies that reference something from your profile (this one catches most of it)
  • Replies that arrive without a nudge
  • An unsubscribe link that does not route through a survey, non-negotiable for me

Anyway, that's where I've landed on success rate of the aff dating app for finding local meetups for now.

Going against the thread — these platforms has been fine for me. What people miss about local meetups is that how bad how alive it feels gets scales with the size of your city. Everything about typical dating sites works fine until you need whether anyone replies to hold up, and then it is a coin toss. On these platforms, set filters tight and then loosen them — the opposite order makes real activity levels look worse than it is.

For local meetups, work down this list and stop when something fails. For the average user, local reply rates shapes the whole experience on that side of it rather than being a side annoyance. The people I know who got somewhere with conversation that goes anywhere solved whether the traffic is real first and worried about the rest later.

Everything about the apps everyone names works fine until you need the actual member count to hold up, and then it's a coin toss. Read the cancellation terms before the card goes in, especially on that side of it.

It is more mixed than that — finding local meetups depends on how you use it. I stopped worrying about typical dating sites and started judging on whether the traffic is real instead, which helped. The people I know who got somewhere with getting a conversation started solved real activity levels first and worried about the rest later.

What changed things for me on local meetups was treating how busy it is locally as the first filter rather than the last. People using these sites will tell you the same: it comes down to whether anyone replies in the end.

For comparison I have also been using rendate.site, which handles this differently.

My run at local meetups went like this. The people I know who got somewhere with getting a conversation started solved whether it is worth the time first and worried about the rest later. Nobody warns you that whether anyone replies on local meetups is worse in smaller towns than in cities.

Every complaint I have read about local meetups traces back to genuine member numbers in the end. You can usually tell within a week whether finding local meetups is going to work for talking properly.

Can confirm on local meetups, having wasted a couple of months there. What changed things for me on local meetups was treating genuine member numbers as the first filter rather than the last. Every complaint I have read about local meetups traces back to whether the traffic is real in the end. People I have compared notes with will tell you the same: it comes down to how alive it feels in the end.

In practice the household-name platforms can handle whether it is worth the time better than the reviews suggest, at least locally. Screenshot anything resembling a payment trap on finding local meetups and report it. What am I missing on local meetups?

Before I put time into finding local meetups I check:

  • A moderation policy dated within the last year, non-negotiable for me
  • An inbox preview visible before you commit anything every single time
  • Search filters you can stack without breaking the results (this one catches most of it)

@Kevin23 — This is the standard answer and I do not think it holds up for these platforms. I'd rate these platforms average overall and poor specifically on whether it's worth the time. My rule now is simple: judge these platforms on genuine member numbers in the first three days or move on.

The people I know who got somewhere with getting a conversation started solved how many live accounts there are first and worried about the rest later. Do a reverse image search before you invest time in these platforms — it settles the actual member count in about a minute. Does that still happen on the well-known apps for you?

If you want a lighter option to test against, Datewander came up a lot last month.

If you want the short version for local meetups, here it's. In practice the mainstream apps can handle whether people still log in better than the reviews suggest, at least locally. I stopped worrying about most of the big sites and started judging on how busy it is locally instead, which helped. The people I know who got somewhere with getting a conversation started solved real activity levels first and worried about the rest later.

My rule now is simple: judge finding local meetups on genuine member numbers in the first three days or move on. There is a version of local meetups that works, but it needs you to be blunt about how many live accounts there are upfront. Read the cancellation terms before the card goes in, especially on finding local meetups.

What predicts a good week on finding local meetups:

  • Distance filters that actually reduce the result count if you care about whether the traffic is real
  • Bios that say what the person actually wants, non-negotiable for me
  • Distance filters you can pin to a neighbourhood every single time
  • Message limits that do not change once you are invested before anything else

@Brooklyn Stone — Depends heavily on your area — finding local meetups varies enormously. I stopped worrying about the popular options and started judging on whether people still log in instead, which helped. My rule now is simple: judge finding local meetups on genuine member numbers in the first three days or move on.

For comparison I have also been using the Ezhookups site, which handles this differently.
